Still no snow in Zurich but lots to keep you occupied thankfully! See below for some of the events in store in Zurich in the run up to Christmas and just beyond.

Christmas Events in Zurich – There are plenty of events taking place: the Singing Christmas Tree, the Märlitram for kids, candle dipping, See here for details of these & lots more so you don’t miss out.

Sunday Shopping in Zurich 21st December - yes, one last chance for Christmas Shopping on a Sunday. Most of the bigger shops will be open in the city on 21st from 11am (some from 10am) – 6pm but do check individual stores just in case.

Buying a Christmas tree – you can buy your own Christmas tree (grown in the woods in Zurich no less) from Stadtgärtnerei,  and at Werkhof Höngerberg and Forstgarten Albisgüetli you can even cut down your own tree on 20th and 21st December. If you’re looking for an FSC certified Christmas tree you can buy from these locations.  As well as from most larger supermarkets and DIY stores you can also buy one at right by the fountain outside Stadelhofen station from 14th December onwards.

Ice Skating – there are plenty of places to go ice skating in and around Zurich. KEK in Küsnacht is open until 14th March, the Dolder has a great rink and Live on Ice at the Hotel Sonne in Küsnacht until 8th February.

Montreux is a small town but it is well known for a couple of pretty big things. In Summer it’s the venue for the Montreux Jazz Festival which takes place for two weeks every July, attracting big names from the world of jazz, pop and rock. In Winter it’s known for its beautiful Christmas Market.

Montreux Noël as it’s called, stretches along the town’s shores of Lake Geneva and is recognized as one of the largest and also the prettiest in Switzerland. It’s on at the moment and continues until the 24th December 2014.

Featuring lots of twinkling Christmas stalls, a ferris wheel, a Christmas Village and a mountain-top Santa’s grotto it’s a must-visit destination if you’re wanting to experience a Swiss Christmas Market with a French accent.

There’s plenty of “vin chaud” on offer as well as raclette, fondue, cold meat platters and lots of sweet offerings too.

It takes about two and a half to three hours to get to Montreux from Zurich. When you arrive not only are you in a part of Switzerland where they speak a different language but it has a noticeably different feel about it too.

The 2014 Swiss “Sports Awards” Gala ceremony, sponsored by Credit Suisse, took place last night at the TV Studios in Oerlikon in Zurich. Twenty athletes were competing for the title of “athlete” and “Sportsman of the Year”. Last year’s winners, Giulia Steingruber and Dario Cologna, were also nominated but they conceded their positions to Roger Federer and Dominique Gisin respectively.

Roger Federer flew in specially for the event and was flying back out straight afterwards to Dubai. Stan Wawrinka was sadly not present due to illness but there were lots of well known sporting faces in evidence. Below Iouri Podladtchikov and Lara Gut.

Christmas is a really special time in Zurich. Not only is the whole city illuminated with beautiful sparkling lights and tasteful decorations but the scent of Glühwein (mulled wine), cinnamon and Winter spices fill the air.

As well as the main Christmas Market in Zurich Hauptbahnhof there are many smaller Christmas Markets all over town. All with their twinkling lights, colourful wares and busy vendors.

The 50ft tall Swarovski tree, decorated with 7,000 ornaments dominates the Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Hauptbahnhof glistening and sparkling across the whole station.

The Singing Christmas tree proves a great attraction to young and old alike and there is a small Christmas market next to it where you can enjoy a warming Glühwein as you listen to the carols.

The myriad lights reflect over the Limmat and the Hotel Storchen entices passers-by walking across Weinplatz with its beautiful illuminations.

Next to Bauschänzli the Conelli Circus provides a bright red landmark, a point where the Limmat ends and Lake Zurich begins.
