Swiss Chocolate Show Overview – Interview with Sylvie Douce with Francois Jeantet, Founders of Salon du Chocolat

and Francois Jeantet Salon du Chocolat

During our recent visit to the Salon du Chocolat NewInZurich were lucky enough to meet with Sylvie Douce and Francois Jeantet (above), the founders of the first Salon du Chocolat event which started back in 1995 in Paris. Sylvie very kindly took time out from her busy schedule at the Zurich Salon du Chocolat to answer some questions.

Sylvie explained how they had had a very busy schedule in March – not just the Salon du Chocolat in Zurich – but four other “Salons” in France too, including an extremely busy Salon du Chocolat in Lille which attracted over 25,000 visitors. The events are really taking off and in fact in Paris later this year, they are actually running two separate Salons du Chocolats, one for the public and a separate trade show as well.

Sylvie explained that the idea of the Salon du Chcolat had been conceived by herself and her husband and business partner, Francois Jeantet, 19 years ago when they launched the first Salon du Chocolat in Paris. Sylvie said that the objective behind the Salon du Chocolat had been to promote the local “chcolatiers’ in each of the towns or cities in which they had held a “Salon du Chocolat”.  We asked why Zurich rather than Geneva had been chosen in the case of Switzerland and Sylvie explained that Zurich Messe had invited them and come up with a great proposition with its location and all its facilities which was backed up by the enthusiasm of the local chocolatiers.

Sylvie and Francois are very keen to work with the Swiss Chocolate industry which has such a great reputation and they had visited many of the Swiss chocolate makers in the run up to the Salon and seen how professional they are and how eager they were to take part. You never know, perhaps Geneva soon too? Other new locations coming up include Germany, Vienna, Brussels and the wonderful news that London is due to have its own Salon du Chocolat at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014 as well!

The highlight of the event must surely be the daily fashion shows where the models wear dresses fashioned from chocolate. So where did the idea for the chocolate fashion show come from? Sylvie explained that chocolate is a luxury item and so is fashion – but they are both accessible luxuries and the idea of something creative to show off the chocolate was the driving force behind it. Over the years there have been approximately 500 dresses created for the Salon du Chocolate and as they are such fragile items and some date back 19 years to the first show, not all of them are still around.

However, the great news is that for the 20th birthday celebrations of the Salon du Chocolat they are planning an exhibition of all the dresses at the Grand Palais in Paris. Some dresses will have to be re-modelled and others that no longer exist will be projected via film, but it will be a splendid way to celebrate the amazing creativity of the past 20 years of the chocolate designs of the Salon du Chocolat.
