Last week NewInZurich attended Kazu Huggler’s private viewing of her latest collection called ASHTA, which means “tomorrow” in Japanese. It was held at her shop in Neptunstrasse in Zurich and as well as being a chance to view Kazu’s beautiful collection as the models sashayed through the store, it also provided an opportunity to view a documentary film called “Tomorrow beyond 3.11”. The film was made by Japanese TV about Kazu’s work in helping Japanese women rebuild their lives post-Tsunami. Thanks to Kazu in the area of Rikuzen Takata, the women have been fashioning clothes using Swiss Bernina sewing machines and Kazu has invested alot of time, energy and inspiration in providing these women with a platform to start again – hence the name “Tomorrow”.

Kazu spoke a few words about her involvement and announced the founding of a charitable association called the “Three Cranes Association” which covers all her charitable work in Japan. Kazu talked about how the mood in Japan was now becoming more positive with the people that she has been helping and how they were now starting to smile again and beginning to look forward to re-building their lives.

Kazu described her new collection ASHTA as fresh, light and full of hope. As well as the stunning dresses and separates, Kazu also showcased some of the beautiful crafts created by some of the projects that Kazu was helping, such as these mugs (which roll over instead of falling) and other simple but beautiful artefacts including the brightly coloured t-shirts.

One of the projects, Tohoku Grandma is a group of local women who are producing tote bags and other accessories which Kazu has been helping them design and which they have been producing with the Bernina sewing machines. Many of them lost all their family in the tsunami but they are now beginning to find enthusiasm and hope for the future as Kazu has been inspiring them just as she inspired us with her collection of beautifully tailored clothes –  a truly amazing woman.
