Exploring the Beautiful Town
of Sterzing Vipiteno in South Tyrol
On a recent trip to Ratchings (also known as Racines) in South Tyrol where we were staying at the beautiful Gourmethotel Tenne Lodges, we took a day out from the slopes and tore ourselves away from the wonderful wellness to visit the nearby town of Sterzing. Also known as Vipiteno, (as everywhere in South Tyrol the place names are listed in both German and Italian), we were enchanted by this beautiful gem of a town.
This pearl of South Tyrol was all set up for Winter with cosy sheepskins on the chairs in cafes, an ice skating rink in red (!!!) in the town square, wonderful restaurants and wine bars and charming shops in little archways. The magnificent town town houses are painted in all colours, many with murals and lots of medieval squares and picturesque fountains.
What’s more if you look right behind the town you see the nearby Rosskopf ski slopes – they are that close! Where else in Europe can you ski directly from the slopes into the heart of the old town?
Don’t miss the Zwölfturn either. We were lucky enough to walk up the steps to the top of the tower and to admire the beautiful views.
In Winter as well as the ski slopes and sledging runs there are beautiful walks you can take, lots of traditional events
