125 Years of the Frauenbadi, Zurich – Exhibition by Alex Zwalen

Frauenbadi Zurich

One of the great things about Summer in Zurich is visiting the amazing “Badis” or “swimming areas” all across the city. Each one is different with its own personality offering different features and facilities. Some are more suited to children, some tend to be aimed more at adults, some are directly on the lake and some are even on the river. One in particular always stands out and that is the Frauenbadi, right in the centre of town on the Limmat at Stadthausquai next to Bauschänzli. Not only does it offer an amazing view of the Grossmünster Church but it also has a small library, shop, and juice bar.

Its architecture is very striking – stylish art deco  – and at night when it’s lit up the reflections of the light on the coloured windows is quite beautiful. There is one big thing about the Frauenbadi though, in that in the day when it’s used  as a swimming pool it’s only for women! However, on certain dates in the evening everything changes, and this beautiful bath house is transformed into a cool place for music, drinks and events and men are also welcome as the Frauenbadi becomes the Barfussbar.

This year the Frauenbadi will be celebrating it’s 125th anniversary and to celebrate it is featuring an exhibition of paintings by Zurich artist Alex Zwalen called “Ansichtssache Frauenbad” which runs until 19th September.

The exhibition is on view to women only during the day but on Monday 29th July and Monday 26th August from 8pm – 11pm and on Thursday 19th September, for the “Finissage”  from 7pm – 11pm there will be a bar, live music and the exhibition can be viewed by everyone.

But women don’t have all the fun – there is a men-only Badi “Männerbad Schanzengraben” too, which incidentally also doubles as a night time venue as Bar Rimini as well – so it’s good to see that these beautiful bathing houses get to be used both day and night during the Badi Season. The above photo was taken at the exhibition’s Vernissage. The Frauenbadi Season this year runs from 9th May to 9th September and it is open daily from 9am to 11am whatever the weather and from 11am – 7.30pm when the weather is good, but shuts early if the weather is not so good. Female admission only – but boys are allowed up to age 6.
