Charity Duck Race Zurich 2013

This Saturday 3,025 rubber ducks took to the river in Zurich to raise money for the Krebsliga Zürich – the Cancer League in Zurich. This is the second duck race in Zurich, an event initiated by Basia Clauer, a pupil at ICS International School.

Starting at the Rathausbrücke in the centre of town the race was officially opened by Basia and  Zurich city councilor Claudia Nielsen. At 3.45pm precisely the ducks jumped into the Limmat and their journey down the river began. Many of the ducks were colourfully decorated (like the winning duck, pictured above) which was sporting a red collar.

After about 30 minutes the first Ducks reached the finishing line near the Landesmuseum and the lucky owner of the first duck across the line won a Fiat  Punto, kindly donated by Autohaus Schiess AG – see photo of the car and winner below.

There were further prizes including flights to Prague, a Micro scooter and more for the owners of the runner up ducks – pictured on the podium below:

The weather was fine and sunny and there was a great atmosphere as around 5,000 visitors and supporters had a lot of fun cheering on the ducks.

Each year, 6,000 people in the canton of Zurich with cancer and the Zurich Cancer League is committed to helping them. All proceeds from this event are going to the “Child, Family & Cancer ” Cancer League of Zurich to help support the valuable work they do.
