The Zunfthaus zur Saffran – Italian Wine & Olive Oil Tasting

Zunfthaus zur Safran Zurich

The Zunfthaus zur Saffran is located right in the heart of Zurich opposite the Rathaus and is one of the traditional “Zunft” or Guild halls. They guilds date back to the 14th century and as well as helping lay down the rules for craftsmen and tradesmen they also helped ensure that competition remained fair.  Each Zunft looked after a particular trade or craft.

The Zunfthaus zur Saffran was originally associated with the merchants of textiles and spices and is a beautiful historic building situated right in front of the River Limmat opposite the Rathaus.

Today it not only houses a restaurant but also is a great venue for events and meetings. Complete with stained glass windows, an old ceramic oven (or Kachelofen as they are called) which you see in many old houses in Switzerland and a beautifully ornate ceiling, it was a sight to behold in its own right.

On 28th October it was the venue for an Italian wine, olive oil and truffle tasting event featuring products from the Livornia and Tuscan area of Italy. There were some great wines on offer such as this “Pinksy” wine from the estate of Kahnh Nguyen and Franco Batzella of Batzella Vineyards.

We also tasted their fantastic “TAM” which was a Bolgheri Superior. The Batzella vineyards are located close to the beach on the central coast of Tuscany and their wines have won numerous awards from Decanter, Wine Spectator , Dei Vini and many other prestigious publications.

We try to publicize as many food events as possible but we were only informed about the Italian event just before it took place. We’ve had lots of notice of the Slow Food Market so we posted with plenty of notice – but will try and give as much info (and notice!) on these events as we can! Have a great time at the Slow Food Market!
