Pop Icons – James Francis Gill in Zurich at Galerie Wild
If you like Pop Art you are doubtless familiar with the Texan artist James Francis Gill. Viewed as one of the early protagonists of Pop Art, his work spans the decades and some of his most acclaimed paintings depict timeless images of Marilyn Monroe. In fact, in 1962 the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased his “Marilyn Tryptych” and it was featured in “Life Magazine” giving him immediate international acclaim.
It’s not widely known, but Gill’s study of Marilyn Monroe actually preceded the more famous Andy Wahrol paintings. James Francis Gill belongs to that band of artists from the ’50s and ’60s who made “Pop Art” what it has become today. Other artists of this genre include Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, James Rosenquist, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg and of course Andy Warhol.
Galerie Wild is hosting an exhibition of his work entitled “Pop Icons James Francis Gill”, which is showing in Zurich until March 28th. Located close to the Viadukt in Zurich the address is:
Galerie Wild, Heinrichstr. 215, 8005 Zürich
