NewInZurich took a preview peek of what’s going on and caught up with young Scottish artist Georgia Russell whose art is being exhibited by Galerie Karsten Greve and who has been selected as this year’s artist for Art Basel’s partner champagne house, Ruinart

Ruinart is actually the oldest champagne house and since art and champagne go hand in hand at events such as this extremely prestigious art fair, it’s a marriage made in heaven.

Georgia who studied in Scotland, London and Paris was selected by Ruinart to create a master piece for Art Basel and drawing on her love of books and talents as a “sculptor of paper” she created a work of art entitled “Le Grand Livre” based on Ruinart’s own ancient “Livre”, a ledger book dating back to 1729, in which the champagne house recorded its sales and information about its clients. Georgia used her trademark tool of choice, a scalpel, to create the stunning art work.

In addition she also designed a decorative cover for the Ruinart “Blanc de Blancs” champagne bottle which echoes the fretwork effect she is known for and which contrasts beautifully with the golden hues of the Ruinart champagne, which is made of 100% Chardonnay grapes.

Inspired by the chalk walls of the Ruinart cellars, Georgia chose the colour white to add freshness and contrast.

In addition to the rich and famous from all over the world there were also representatives from the House of Windsor gracing the Art Basel halls… Lady Helen Windsor and her cousin Viscount Linley were amongst early visitors to Art Basel who kindly posed for a photo for NewInZurich.
