It’s that time of year when the Christmas Markets all over Switzerland are getting ready to open their doors and offer you a Glühwein and lots more. There are many Christmas Markets all over Switzerland but here are some of the key ones for Christmas 2014. They make an ideal outing for family and friends or for an afterwork get together – and are always a great inspiration for Christmas gifts.

Zurich Christmas Markets 2014:

Zurich Christmas Market at Hauptbahnhof one of Europe’s biggest indoor markets with the glittering 15m Swarovski Christmas Tree. 21st Nov – 24th Dec.

Europaallee Market Christmas market next to main railway station 24th Nov – 24th December

Hirschenplatz in the Niederdorf, the old town 28th November – 23rd December 

Heiliger BimBam  6th – 7th December at Klub Plaza and 18th – 21st December at Maag Halle

Christmas Market by the Singing Christmas Tree  Werdmühleplatz 20th November – 23rd December

Rapperswil Christmas Market – further up Lake Zurich 12th – 21st December (shut Monday 15th Dec)

Basel biggest Christmas Market in Switzerland 27th November to 23rd December 

Baden Advent Market 6th December – which is also Samichlaus Day

Berne 29th November – 24th December

Biel 4th – 24th December

Bremgarten 4th – 7th December

Ensiedeln 29th November  to 8th December

Lausanne 2st November to 24th December 

Lucerne 22nd November to 23rd December 

Montreux 21st November to 24th December 

Morges the biggest covered market in French speaking Switzerland 10th – 14th December

Winterthur 28th November – 23rd December

Shopping Sundays 2014:

Christmas Shopping Sundays

The three “Christmas Shopping Sundays” in Zurich this year fall on 30th November, 7th December and 21st December. Around 500 shops will open in the centre of Zurich. Out of town stores may have different dates for example see details for: Glatt Shopping Centre (30th Nov, 7th, 21st and 28th Dec) and Volikland (14th & 21st Dec)

Please note that shops are CLOSED on Christmas Day, Boxing Day (Stephantag) and New Year’s Day.

Late Night Shopping Zurich & Christmas Lights and Christmas Events

Thursday 20th November is “Christmas Lights and Night Shopping in Zurich” when many of the shops in the centre of town stay open late till 10pm.  It all kicks off with the “Lucy” Christmas lights being switched on at 6pm.

Candle Making for Kids or  Zürcher Kerzenziehen takes place in Bürkliplatz until 22nd December from 10am – 8pm, Monday to Friday. Read here for more information

    There’s another little Christmas Market at the Shopville in Zurich, where they have very nice clothes and accessory for kids and, above all, the best roasted almonds prepared by hand that I’ve ever tasted! You should definitely visit! It’s in front of the Marinello store.
