Montreux Noël – Swiss Christmas Market with a French Accent

Montreux is a small town but it is well known for a couple of pretty big things. In Summer it’s the venue for the Montreux Jazz Festival which takes place for two weeks every July, attracting big names from the world of jazz, pop and rock. In Winter it’s known for its beautiful Christmas Market.

Montreux Noël as it’s called, stretches along the town’s shores of Lake Geneva and is recognized as one of the largest and also the prettiest in Switzerland. It’s on at the moment and continues until the 24th December 2014.

Featuring lots of twinkling Christmas stalls, a ferris wheel, a Christmas Village and a mountain-top Santa’s grotto it’s a must-visit destination if you’re wanting to experience a Swiss Christmas Market with a French accent.

There’s plenty of “vin chaud” on offer as well as raclette, fondue, cold meat platters and lots of sweet offerings too.

It takes about two and a half to three hours to get to Montreux from Zurich. When you arrive not only are you in a part of Switzerland where they speak a different language but it has a noticeably different feel about it too.

There are all manner of gift ideas on sale at the market and it’s a a great place to buy Christmas presents.
