The 2014 Swiss “Sports Awards” Gala ceremony, sponsored by Credit Suisse, took place last night at the TV Studios in Oerlikon in Zurich. Twenty athletes were competing for the title of “athlete” and “Sportsman of the Year”. Last year’s winners, Giulia Steingruber and Dario Cologna, were also nominated but they conceded their positions to Roger Federer and Dominique Gisin respectively.

Roger Federer flew in specially for the event and was flying back out straight afterwards to Dubai. Stan Wawrinka was sadly not present due to illness but there were lots of well known sporting faces in evidence. Below Iouri Podladtchikov and Lara Gut.

As well as the awards ceremony there was also a “flying dinner” and Apéro and the whole event was beautifully organised.

The Davis Cup Tennis team won the team award:
Marcel Hug won the paralympic award
Kariem Hussain won the newcomer of the year award
The trainer of the year award was won by Guri Hetland.
Musical Interludes
There was musical entertainment in the form of German singer Herbert Grönemeyer, Italian rock singer Gianna Nannini from Italy and Swiss band Pegasus who hail from Biel.
