Zurich Street Food Festival Dolder Ice Rink
29th – 31st May 2015
This weekend a very special foodie fest has been taking place – the Zurich Street Food Festival. It started on Friday and was in full flow Saturday and the best news is that it continues all day Sunday 31st May too! We visited on Saturday and are happy to report that the variety and quality of the food was fantastic – you really should go and take a look!
Located at the Dolder ice rink it’s packed with 150 vendors selling all manner of tasty morsels from food trucks and stalls, and furnished with long tables down the aisles where you can sit down and eat in comfort.
In the morning as they were setting up we went for a little wander around and tasted a variety of mouth-watering delicacies. Fuelled with an excellent coffee from the guys at Campesino Coffee Roasters we began a short tour.
We started with an Afghan speciality from Afghan Kitchen, where the dough is cooked over a grill until it rises and then packed with a variety of really tasty fillings. Tastes delicious and very friendly service.
We then tried Taiwanese specialities with a tasty delicacy below which had the most amazing dough, courtesy of Panda Buns:
Very tasty Vietnamese Street Food was on offer from BanhamiKitchen
while Das Pure & Wood Food had some very interesting sausage offerings including one which included Jersey Blue cheese by Willi Schmid, the well known Swiss cheese maker.
There were also plenty of drinks including this very pleasant fizz to wash things down.
We tried some really amazing ice creams. Sugar, Sugar, Sugar was offering both cucumber ice-cream and sweet potato ice cream – both adorned with walnuts and packed with so many vegetables that you surely must be able to count it as one of your “5 a day”?
The cucumber ice cream (above in 3D) was made with yogurt and cucumber and ironically very little sugar, sugar, sugar…
Watching Miss Marshall’s Ice cream being created was almost as good as tasting it …
(well not quite, as the ice cream was amazing!) but it was great to see it being freshly created in front of your very eyes using dry ice with witchcraft-like plumes of smoke making it very captivating.
The two 3D photos of the ice creams were taken with the “3DAround” app, courtesy of Lukas Schleuniger and Erik Fonseka.
There’s so much more to discover … pulled pork, Martha’s Salad (whose chef Sandro Zinggeler was best young cook of Switzerland 2009) and their poached egg and mashed potato in a cup … succulent steaks from Route 26, Captain Plant’s tex mex burgers, Taucherli’s 100% chocolate, to mention but a few. So if you get time, do pop by and discover for yourself.
The best way to get to the ice rink is via the Dolderbahn – but don’t buy a tram ticket on Sunday as all second class public transport in the whole of Zurich is FREE for the day on Sunday 31st May 2015.
