The Zurich River Boats on the Limmat
One of the best ways of taking a quick tour of Zurich on your own is to board a river boat in Zurich. Not only is it a great way of seeing the centre of the city and many of the key historic buildings, including the Grossmunster, the Frauenmunster and St Peter’s, but it’s also amazingly good value too! The river boats only run from April to October and are all equipped with panoramic glass roofs to get you the best views of the city.
They are low and flat so that they can fit under the seven bridges over the Limmat and each can accommodate up to 51 passengers. Certain stops on the route get very busy, like Landesmuseum, the main starting point, for example, so get there early. As well as travelling up and down they also go onto Lake Zurich.
You can get on and off whenever you choose and do check the website for full details of departure times and routes. As they run on the river they are subject to weather and water restrictions so after a spell of very heavy rainfall resulting in high water levels they are sometimes unable to run – as they need to fit safely under the bridges.
The boats are made up of a substantial amount of glass – so be warned you can get quite hot on very sunny days. However, the best thing about them is that they are remarkable value as they are one of the many modes of transport included in your regular tram/train/bus ticket in Zurich. Don’t just take a trip on one if you’re a visitor – use them as a local too!
You may also be interested to know that there are a number of water taxis or “Wasser Taxis” in Zurich as in the picture above. Rates vary a lot and also the types of offering as some take you on simple journeys along the Limmat, others you can hire for a fixed price per hour and others require a minimum number of passengers and offer added extras such as refreshments and meals too. You can find them at the quayside around Bürkliplatz and Bauschänzli as well as various other locations around the lake.
Enjoy seeing Zurich from a waterside view.
