Lunch at The Restaurant Dolder Grand Nespresso Gourmet Weeks
We recently wrote about the Nespresso Gourmet Weeks lunch and dinner promotion at top restaurants and hotels all over Switzerland. It’s a fabulous idea thought up by Nespresso, which combines coffee and gastronomy, top chefs and wonderful restaurants – and all at a more affordable price than usual for these prestigious establishments.
Throughout Switzerland 15 restaurants were participating in the “Nespresso Gourmet Weeks” event offering lunches for CHF 70 (excluding drinks) and dinners for CHF 120 (excluding drinks). We were lucky enough to be invited for lunch at The Restaurant at the Dolder Grand Hotel in Zurich (the hotel has recently been awarded GaultMillau Hotel of the Year 2016) and couldn’t wait to meet top chef Heiko Nieder and to try out his coffee-inspired lunch menu.
The Restaurant is eye-catchingly furnished with walls covered in gold leaf and comfortable well spaced out tables with beautiful crisp linen. With 2 Michelin stars and 18 GaultMillau points and one of the best locations in Zurich, we knew this would be a great lunch but it certainly exceeded our expectations.
We met up with Heiko before the meal, naturally enough, over a Nespresso coffee. He told us how he views coffee as a spice that you can combine in cooking like any other. He explained how he enjoyed the challenge of combining coffee in all aspects of the meal, not just the easy courses like the dessert and we were looking forward to this culinary voyage of discovery.
To begin with we were presented with a generous collection of “amuse bouches” tiny but perfectly crafted and each one bursting with flavour. The were all delicious but the delicate truffle egg which was served in a silver painted egg shell looked wonderful and tasted amazing and was our favourite.
Our starter was a fish soup in which coffee had been infused into the broth.
It was barely discernible but gave a subtle flavour which married perfectly with the rest of the ingredients. It was followed by beautifully cooked venison and was accompanied by a leek Bircher muesli with a hint of coffee. It was served with a separate little pot of the most delicious creamy mashed potato.
A molten chocolate dessert served with corn ice cream was the icing on the cake! Beautifully presented, cooked to perfection – and of course, with coffee mixed in with the chocolate.
Just as we thought it was all over and were looking forward to our coffee a beautiful collection of petit fours arrive. They were so pretty that each one was a work of art in its own right. They were delicious!
Feeling rather full at this point we valiantly made space for these tasty morsels only to be offered a further treat – chocolates with the coffee!
How could we refuse? We convinced ourselves it was all in the course of research – and they tasted amazing!
All in all it was a wonderful meal in a stunning setting with a very clever yet subtle coffee twist!
