Confiserie Honold Celebrates 110 Years
It’s 110 years since Fritz Honold first set up Confiserie Honold in Rennweg 53, Zurich. What began in 1905 with just 10 employees has now grown into a company with over 95 employees. The original shop is located in an ideal position just off Bahnhofstrasse at Rennweg 53.
The café and tea room in Rennweg sells not only cakes and savoury items like salads and sandwiches, but most importantly of all (in my eyes) the most exquisite chocolate!
Honold’s truffles and pralinés under the expert care of Master Chocolatier Ivo Jud are simply to die for! There is a huge selection to choose from catering for all tastes – and I’m sure if you try them out you’ll soon find a firm favourite. Honold’s is also famous for the Chocolate Tram which is an annual attraction for all chocolate lovers in Zurich!
There are classic cream truffles, fabulous nut pralinés, caramel delights, chocolate and alcohol concoctions ranging from the ever popular Swiss “Kirschstängli” to whisky truffles all the way through to margaritas, to mention but a few.
One of the best sellers is an intriguing mix of crumbly flakes of nougat, with tonka beans and a pinch of fleur de sel, all enveloped in Criollo de Venezuela and milk chocolate and decorated with edible gold dust. Named “Lotti’s Best” in honour of a very special lady, Honold’s previous owner, Lotti Honold, it is certainly quite delicious!
Another fabulous creation is “Honold’s Traube” containing a whole Regina grape macerated in cognac for a year, with the sugar shell coated delicately with Criollo de Venezuela chocolate and rolled in icing sugar. This one definitely gives you a “kick” – one to warm you up on a cold day!
Honold’s produce is also very seasonal and this is reflected in special ranges all through the year. They also have circular bars in a variety of interesting and unusual flavours as well as the wonderful chopped chocolate available in Vacu-packs and tins – ideal for making your own top quality hot chocolate.

Honold’s is a family business, now in the fourth generation and under the management of current owner Cristina de Perregaux. Cristina is passionate about using the freshest, top quality ingredients and her attention to detail is very much apparent. As well as the Rennweg shop there are also two other Honold locations – one in Küsnacht and one in Zurichberg. What’s more is that a new one is planned to open soon in Herrliberg. The Herrliberg branch is at Dorf 12 in Herrliberg and opened on 29th February 2016.

Since mid-February 2013 all the chocolate products, pralinés, marzipan and other confectionery products have been made in the atelier in Küsnacht. The branch in Rennweg is the “Traiteur department” producing the savoury items, canapés, sandwiches – not forgetting the ever popular Swiss staple, Birchermüesli.

Honold’s 110th Anniversary was marked with a series of events which started in October 2015 and continued into early 2016. One of the events was the Historic Culinary Tour of Zurich which was a most interesting and entertaining walk through the old town led by food historian Dominik Flammer. Dominik enthralled us all with his historic tales and anecdotes and at the end we all indulged in a fabulous afternoon tea of Honold specialities at the nearby Restaurant Kindli.
