The China Gardens Zurich –
A great Place to Visit
If you’ve ever strolled along the lake in Zurich one of the places you may well have come across is the The China Gardens. Nestled between Bellerivestrasse and Blatterwiese at Zurich Horn along the edge of the lake it’s a little piece of China in the midst of some very green parkland. It’s got a small island with a pond, pavilions and a small palace. It’s considered a temple garden and is one of the highest-ranking gardens outside of China.
A gift to the people of Zurich by its Chinese twin city Kunming, it opened in 1994 and is run today by Stadt Zurich. When it was created in 1993 garden professionals and craftsmen from both Kunming and Zurich worked together to create it all. It was given to Zurich by the city of Kunming in thanks for the technical and scientific help the city had given them with their water supply and drainage in China. It opened in 1994 in the presence of the mayor of Kunming and Mayor Josef Estermann.
The “Three Friends in Winter” – the pine tree, the bamboo and the plum are the main themes of the garden and the whole area although quite small is beautifully kept and well worth a short visit. According to the Chinese rules of Feng Shui Zurich’s China Garden is ideally located between the city, the lake and the mountains.
After your visit why not go for a stroll along the lake, go for a swim in the lake, meet friends for a picnic or pop into the little Kiosk Restaurant close by or visit the Chinese takeaway. In Summer don’t miss the fabulous ice creams from the friendliest ice cream seller in Zurich!
