Christmas Markets Guide Zurich and Switzerland 2021
It’s getting colder in Zurich and there is already snow in the mountains. The Lucy Christmas Lights and the Swarovski Christmas Tree were turned on on Thursday 25th November at 6pm and the late night shopping till 10pm kicked off straight after. Many of the Zurich Christmas Markets open their doors on 25th November at the same time – see details below.
So now is the time for the Christmas Markets all over Switzerland to welcome you with a Glühwein and lots of seasonal fare. Each Christmas Market has its own character and specialities – so don’t just visit one! Visit as many as you can 🙂
We’ve listed the key Christmas Markets in Zurich and Switzerland for Christmas 2021 below. So take along your friends and indulge and enjoy! Please note this year most (but not all) markets are only doing cashless transactions and access to the market is only with via 3 G certificate. Please check the individual websites for specific requirements and be aware that things might change at short notice.
This popular Christmas market featuring around 120 stalls located right in front of the Opera House and Bellevue, is taking place at Sechselaeutenplatz again this year. One of the many highlights are the food and refreshments. Special features include an ice skating rink right in front of the Opera House and a beautiful Fondue Stübli in the Chalet by the tree. It’s so cosy you might not want to leave. Please note this year all transactions and are cashless and access to the market is with your 3 G certificate.

Frau Gerolds Garten is located next to the Freitag building near Hardbrücke and is a great place to enjoy the Christmas atmosphere with all the fairy lights and a Glüwein or two in front of one of the lovely firepits. As well as the cosy outside area there is also an indoor Fondue Stube too.

The Bauschänzli overlooking the river Limmat in the centre of Zurich is aglow with coloured lights. This year’s theme is Zurich meets St Moritz. You can book a sit down meal inside (2 sittings available) or just stop by for a drink and a snack and enjoy the beautiful lights reflected in the river.
Thursday 25th November 2021 is the datewhen approximately 150 of the shops in the centre of Zurich will stay open late till 10pm. It kicked off with the “Lucy” Christmas lights being switched on at 6pm. Do pop down to Bahnhofstrasse to see Zurich’s beautiful Christmas lights!
