Bubbly. Fizz. Champers. Shampoo. Champansky…however you say it, the word alone is bound to bring on a smile. At the Salon du Champagne, a Champagne tasting show hosted by Wiine.me at the Metropol Restaurant on Tuesday, the NewInZurich crew got to learn about and sample a slew of the sparkling stuff, smiling all the way.

While there were too many to taste in one afternoon, we enjoyed a few brands we already knew, Taittinger, Perrier-Jouët, and Egly-Ouriet, and discovered some less-famous houses like Alexandre Bonnet, Besserat de Bellefon, Phillippe Gamet and Waris Hubert. In doing so, we fulfilled the mission of Wiine.me, an innovative Geneva-based sommelier service start-up, which seeks to educate the public about wine and help people discover and enjoy a range of new varieties.

With Switzerland a top bubbly consumer, (it ranked 8th in the world in 2014 behind the UK, USA and Italy, among others), many hotels, restaurants and retailers were also on hand looking for the next best thing before the show opened to the public in the evening.

“We really want to show people that next to the famous big brands, there are a lot of small producers that are really good that people don’t know about,” says Kat Morse, director of Wiine.me’s Wine Academy and the Salon Du Champagne.

Morse, a U.S. lawyer-turned-sommelier, was honored with the Swiss Champagne Ambassador Award in 2013 and has been working with Wiine.me since 2014. The company’s core business is a monthly wine subscription service, which delivers a “curated” box of three bottles per month based on a theme. Customers who want more of a particular vintage can order from the company’s website. In addition, the company offers a range of educational and event services including its Wine Academy curriculum. Subscribe or learn more here: wiine.me
