Nespresso Gourmet Weeks Dinner at Ecco Restaurant Zurich

 

If you love coffee and adore gourmet food then the “Nespresso Gourmet Weeks” are definitely for you. This year there were 17 restaurants taking part across the whole of Switzerland and we were lucky enough to be invited to a Nespresso Gourmet Weeks dinner at the Ecco Restaurant at The Hotel Atlantis by Giardino in Zurich.

Stefan Heilemann is the Executive Chef there and we were particularly excited as we had only once tried his food before at a flying dinner for a Luce wine tasting event at Ecco. On that evening some months earlier we had been so very impressed by the flavours and texture of the beautifully presented dishes he had prepared that we arrived with high hopes. We were not to be disappointed.

After a quick drink at the stylish bar we proceeded to the dining room. It’s a large, spacious and elegant room with a mixture of seating on large white sofas and small tables and there is an adjoining private dining room right next door to it.

We were seated at a table by the window and no sooner had we opened our special “Nespresso Weeks” menu,  a series of the most amazing amuse-bouches arrived. We were treated to a succession of beautifully presented wonderfully tasting delicacies and not only did they look too good to eat but they were just simply delicious!

The amuse bouches were all wonderful but one of my top favourites was this roll of salmon.

The bread arrived and it was not just any old bread – but a dark grey bread which included amongst its ingredients ash and malt extract. I’m not a huge bread fan but this was warm and delicious and came served with a selection of buttermilk butter and smoked butter along with a box of cress and a small pair of scissors to further enhance the flavour.

The service which was super efficient and attentive but also friendly and not over the top. There was a high ratio of staff to guests and you could see that everything worked like clockwork and the even slightest thing wasn’t overlooked. We had specially selected wines to accompany each of the courses and my favourite was this Swiss wine from the Geneva region:

Next we had the first proper starter which was marinated duck liver, americanello grape, cereals and a caramel made with Nespresso grand cru cosi. It simply melted in the mouth and had wonderful flavours.

A beautifully cooked tender Norwegian scallop with fennel and linseed brioche was infused with the indriya grand cru from India.

This was followed by a delicious turbot dish with beetroot and a fish sauce with oil of Nespresso grand cru arpeggio.

Before moving to the sweet course we had venison which had a crust made with Nespresso grand cru envivo lungo.

The addition of coffee in every course was very delicate and not really discernible as it was used more as a spice to enhance the flavour of each of the key ingredients.

We enjoyed each one and  then just when we thought we could eat no more the plum hazelnut brownie  (below) with Nespresso grand cru volutto appeared with an additional mini dessert (above)!

They were gorgeous to look at and simply fabulous to eat. It was a good idea that we had had the lightest of lunches that day as this really was a multi course extravaganza – and all with the utmost flavour.

We loved this dinner and it was great to meet Stefan Heilemann and his team after simply one of the most delicious meals we have had in Switzerland! We were truly inspired by Stefan’s cooking and we will definitely be going back to Restaurant Ecco.
