Winter Horse Racing and the Squirrel Trail Arosa Switzerland
Last Sunday if you were in Arosa you might have come across “Pferderennen auf Schnee” or horse racing in the snow. This day of horse racing in the snow marked the opening of the 2017 turf season and continues a Swiss tradition of horse racing in the snow and on frozen lakes which dates back over 90 years.

After starting off with “Skijöring” with Freiberger horses, there were further harness races and trotting races as well as world exclusive hurdle races on snow. Photographer Geoff Pegler was there to catch all the action with his camera and as you can see from the photos it was a beautifully crisp, sunny, cloudless day.

If it all looks like too much action, another activity to be found in Arosa is a walk along the famous Squirrel Trail. Popular with adults and children alike it is fun and educational and you get to see some pretty adorable squirrels.

As well as getting close enough to feed the squirrels, you can see them watching you coyly from the trees before skipping across the snow. However, watch out as they may well start climbing up your trousers once they feel at ease with you!
