Hotel Spenglers In the Heart of Davos
There’s a new hotel right in the heart of Davos which opened just a few weeks ago. With 80 rooms and suites and a super central location, Hotel Spenglers is no ordinary new hotel as it is rooted in the history of the resort of Davos itself.
History of Hotel Spenglers Davos
Previously known as the Hotel Alexander it has been completely renovated and is now a bright modern hotel with all mod cons and a slight art deco twist about it. Originally built in 1882 by the famous German doctor, Alexander Spengler, who founded the building as a people’s sanatorium, it was later named “The Alexander Clinic” in his honour.
Convinced of the healing effects of the pure mountain air in Davos, Spengler set about promoting the town as a Winter health destination. In fact he helped put Davos on the map as a “go to” wellness destination in Switzerland. In 1865, the first two Winter spa guests came to Davos because of him, but by the turn of the century there were approximately 600,000 overnight stays, as Davos slowly transformed itself into a world famous health resort. The building was used as a dermatology clinic until 2004 when it opened as Hotel Alexander.
Alexander Spengler’s son Carl followed took over from his father as head of the sanatorium and in 1923, he founded the famous Ice Hockey Spengler Cup. The tournament takes place between Christmas and New Year every year and is one of the most popular events in Davos.
New Beginning as Hotel Spenglers
In December 2016 following major refurbishment, it reopened as Hotel Spenglers, heralding a new chapter in the history of this esteemed building.
The exterior and entrance of the hotel is neither grand nor glitzy, but inside it has been stylishly renovated throughout. The London design team Woods Bagot, have drawn influence from other international modern hotels such as the Hoxton in London. As you enter there is a warm, relaxed feel about the place, and after passing the reception on your left you arrive straight into the heart of the hotel where there is a relaxed vibe and plenty of seating.
The lounge / bar area opens onto the restaurant and there are sofas and chairs all around, so whether you want to sit down and read a book, have a cocktail or snack (the kitchen have amazingly flexible hours) or catch up with friends or family over a coffee you will feel totally at home.
It’s bright and airy and the sun pours in from the windows leading to the balcony. There’s also a TV area with all the latest magazines and journals.
The bedrooms are all well appointed with the amenities you would expect from a good hotel. There are plenty of plugs, separate USB chargers in the wall (which is always a great thing when you’re travelling) and great free wifi which is accessible all over the hotel! You can tell that a lot of thought went into the design as everything is not just super comfortable, but practical too.
There are a few interesting touches which show their commitment to sustainablity – instead of individual mini shampoo and shower gels, they have larger multi-use bottles to save wastage and help the environment.
We stayed in one of the apartments which comprised a spacious bedroom with ensuite shower room, a lounge area, a dining area and a kitchen with fridge, freezer, hob and Nespresso coffee machine.
It has everything you need for self catering – although it would be a good idea to have some milk or cream in the fridge for the coffee machine! A nice touch was the little outdoor balcony with a table and chairs outside.
Ideal for Skiing, Shopping, Hiking and Exploring
The central location is ideal for both skiing (or hiking and walking in the Summer) and shopping as well as strolling around exploring the town with its numerous shops, restaurants and cafés.
The main shopping street is just around the corner and so is the bus that takes you directly to the Parsenn ski lifts. On foot it’s a few minutes walk to the Jakobshorn area of skiing. You’re also not far in Winter from the IgluDorf in the ski resort – see below.
The hotel has a modern boot room and heated ski boot racks to keep your ski accessories safe and dry.
In Summer there are beautiful walks and hikes and even a golf course close by.
Only Hotel in Centre of Davos with Rooftop Terrace
The roof terrace, Level 5, is the jewel in the crown. Spenglers is the only hotel in the centre of town with a roof terrace and it affords wonderful 360 degree views over the mountains and over the town itself. A fabulous location for drinks, barbecues, brunches or for simply admiring the scenery.
Restaurant – New Ideas – Pots and Plates
The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers a modern approach to food. The chef serves a variety of tasty international cuisine, along with local produce such as waygu beef from a farm down the road.
The waygu beef was delicious and we teamed it with salad and sweet potato fries which were crisp and delicious. For starters we had a Japanese style soup which came with ribs on the side and a salad. Beware though, the portions for some of the dishes were quite large so if you fancy dessert you may wish to forgo the starter!
Breakfast the following morning was very good indeed with lots of choice and plenty of delicious fresh options which you could serve yourself, as well as cooked egg dishes which can be ordered at your table.
Spa Coming in December 2017
The hotel is building a 1000 m² spa complex which is due to open in December 2017 and this will be a marvellous addition to the hotel both for Summer and Winter. Not only will it include a sauna, steam and jaccuzzi but also a swimming pool, a fitness room and a massage and wellness area.
A Chapel Inside the Hotel
The hotel even boasts its own chapel which nowadays is used for meetings and conferences. In fact all sorts of functions from business events to birthday, wedding and Christmas celebrations can also be accommodated here or in the other large conference facility on offer.
So whether you’re a family, a couple or a single looking for a centrally located hotel in Davos that’s modern, comfortable and spacious with friendly helpful service, don’t hesitate to book into Hotel Spenglers.
