Imagine a square packed with brightly painted giant Easter eggs? We were in Kiev this week and visited Sophia Square which is filled with these beautiful works of art from various artists from all over Ukraine for the annual Easter Egg Festival.
In fact there are over 500 eggs packed in the square all with different designs.
It is a Ukranian tradition to exchange these painted eggs or “pysanky” and apparently the Ukranians were decrorating their eggs in this elaborate fashion long before Christianity arrived in the country.
However, during the Orthodox Church’s Holy Week it has now become a tradition for Sophia Square to be transformed with hundreds of these beautiful fibreglass eggs.
As you admire the various designs which range from flowers, to biblical stories, to copies of famous paintings, animals and flowers, there is music to accompany your visit emanating from large speakers set out on the square.
It’s a really beautiful exhibition and is free for all to see. If you are in Kiev in the run up to Easter do make sure you pop by and take a look.
Stay tuned for more of our visit to Kiev, which is hosting the Eurovision Song Contest from 9th – 13th May 2017. All coming up on the blog very soon!
The Festival is organised via Folk Ukraine. For more information on visiting Kiev see here.
