Visiting Ticino one of the “must-do” activities is a trip to the Monte Generoso Cogwheel Railway Ticino. Not only do you get awesome views as you take the railway to the summit, but from the top you can even see as far as Milan in Italy.

The stunning panorama allows you to see Lakes Lugano, Como, Varese and Maggiore, as well as  the city of Lugano, the Po Valley region and Milan, the Apennine mountains, from Gran Paradiso to Monte Rosa, from the Matterhorn to the Jungfrau and the Gotthard massif and the Bernina mountains. We visited in April and there was snow covering the viewing platform and as the sun set it looked really magical.

The Journey to the Top

The railway track is just 9km long and the journey takes around 40 minutes to ascend to the peak which lies at 1704m. The cogwheel railway has been running for 125 years through the picturesque scenery of the Monte Generoso Natural Park, from the starting point at Capolago on Lake Lugano. There is even a steam train which dates back to 1890 which is the oldest one operating in the country. Additionally there are four electric trains and two vintage trains.

From the top you get fabulous views over the mountains and beyond, and whether you decide to take a relaxing stroll or go on a guided tour or visit the bear cave (June to September), you can’t help but be struck by the beauty of the location. For those who want to explore further there are 27km of bike trails (and you can hire bikes here too) as well as 51km of hiking trails.

Fiore di Pietra by Mario Botta

The new building by Mario Botta’s called “Fiore di Pietra”, which means “stone flower” in English is simply stunning. Beautiful yet powerful, this unique work of architecture houses two restaurants as well as a conference room. It’s a truly magnificent work of art and as the sun set while we were there the light reflected off the windows changing colour by the moment.

The interior is light, airy and spacious and was also designed by Botta. The large windows allow you to admire the views from every angle and the building is stream lined and modern but also extremely practical. A visit to see the Fiore di Pietra is certainly another very good reason to take the Monte Generoso Cogwheel Railway and whilst you’re there why not enjoy a meal with fabulous views stretching for miles and miles?
