Family Fun at Club Med Opio Provence
Club Med Opio in the Rolling Hills of Provence
Just a short 30 minute taxi ride from Nice airport you’re at the newly refurbished Club Med Opio. Located in 60 hectares of beautiful Provencal countryside, visions of Peter Mayle and “A year in Provence” spring to mind, as you journey through the Southern French countryside past beautiful little villages and quaint churches. Breathing in the fragranced air of the colourful gardens with lavender and brightly coloured flowers, you really feel you’ve arrived in the Mediterranean.
As well as its proximity to Nice airport, Opio is only around 15km from the nearest beach and the local villages surrounding the area, such as Gourdon, are picture perfect and wonderful to visit. Club Med Village Opio recently underwent a 10 Million Euro refit and now has even more to offer in terms of space, amenities and in particular the new “Creactive”, Cirque du Soleil experience.
So what does a Club Med Holiday entail?
Club Med holidays consist of “villages” (of which there are close to 80 worldwide) offering a very special kind of all inclusive holiday with a wining formula and lots of loyal fans. As a Club Med veteran of around 6 family holidays, I count myself amongst the latter and although it’s been a few years since my last Club Med holiday, I was delighted to be invited to the re-opening event for Club Med Opio and to enjoy the Club Med experience once more.

All Inclusive Food, Drink, Activities and Childcare
The Club Med idea hails from France and there is definitely a French flavour to all the holiday – although since my last visit a few years back, I’d say it has become a lot more “international” and in particular “English speaking” in the intervening time.
The all inclusive concept with delicious food, free drinks, as well as a host of activities from morning till dusk, and plentiful childcare (with a crèche catering for babies from 4 months old to kids clubs for up to 17 year olds), is perfect for families, as well as active couples and singles too.
At Opio there is a large main restaurant, the “Provence” (above) with a lovely newly extended terrace offering a varied and appetising menu of international delicacies as well as two further restaurants, the “Golf”, close to the golf course serving lunch and the “Estérel” for lunch and dinner.
The food is freshly prepared and very tempting with an abundance of choice and everything from juicy prime rib steaks, to local fish and Provençal specialities to decadent desserts and wonderful French cheese was on offer when I was there. Another bonus is that wines and drinks are all included in the price, (not just with meals but at the bar too) although there are premium drinks available if you wish, for which you pay extra.
The beauty of this holiday is that there are a multitude of activities for the whole family to take part in and you can choose as many or as few activities as you wish. No one is judging – it’s all up to you!
So if your idea of a holiday is relaxing in the sun by the pool with a good book and maybe strolling through the olive groves, the Zen pool is in an ideal location. If water aerobics and family pool fun with the bar on hand serving everything from coffee and tea to cocktails is more your style, you may prefer to lounge at the main pool; at Club Med there’s something for everyone.

Great Sport and Inclusive Activities
However, if what you’re looking for is an active, fitness oriented holiday with sports activities of all kinds, you have everything on hand in one place, together with first class instruction. It’s a great opportunity to have a go at a sport you’ve never tried before, whatever your age. Included in the program of activities are tennis, volley ball, archery, table tennis and fitness classes and since 1st July 2017, Creactive Cirque du Soleil instruction. All with expert and patient tuition from the “GOs”, or “Gentils Organisateurs” as the staff are known.
The Creactive Cirque du Soleil activities
Creactive – Cirque du Soleil Training
“Creactive” has been launched in conjunction with the Cirque du Soleil to provide instruction in the circus and acrobatic skills so familiar to those who have seen the Cirque du Soleil in action.
Following the successful introduction of this activity at the Punta Arena in Mexico, Club Med Opio is the first resort in Europe to offer this exciting activity.
It marks an important collaboration with the Cirque to Soleil brand and CEO Daniel Lamarre was present for the official opening ceremony by Club Med CEO, Henri Giscard d’Estaing, which took place whilst I was there.

Creactive appeals to all ages, particularly children, and is a fabulous addition to the range of activities on offer. To see what Creative is like take a look at this video of Creactive here.
The NoSmoke Electric Cars
There are also a number of extra chargeable activities, for example golf (there is a 9 hole course on site as well as many courses nearby), mountain bike and electric bike hire and excursions. One of the excursions I can thoroughly recommend is a trip out on the all-electric “NoSmoke” cars which was fantastic!
You pick up the cars at Club Med (one of you needs to have a drivers licence as you will be driving on the open road) and drive through the most beautiful countryside to the local towns and villages. Each of the NoSmokes takes up to four people and they are a sort of cross between a Mini-Moke and a golf cart – but they do have a surprising amount of speed once you get going!
Driving along the winding roads we stopped off at local villages like Gourdon to admire the views and take a stroll, as well as at lay-bys and scenic locations (like the waterfalls above) to take in the Provencal beauty and get a few photos.
The NoSmokes are easy to drive and a fabulous way to take in the surrounding countryside in this most beautiful corner of France.
Club Med Spa
In addition to the swimming pools, there is a modern well equipped gym and fitness centre and the Club Med Spa. The Spa has wonderfully professional staff, a private and very relaxing spa pool with Turkish bath and sauna as well as fabulous facials and massages. I had a facial there which was sublime and there is a good selection of beauty treatments to choose from.

My room was well designed and comfortable rather than luxurious but perfectly well equipped with a little balcony over the garden below and a really powerful shower, something I always appreciate. All the bathrooms have been modernised and the level of comfort throughout has been upgraded. The resort is a 4 Trident village and Club Med categorises its villages from 3 to 5 Tridents.

Take a look at this schematic below to get a view of the space and facilities on offer. The Club also has a private beach you can visit during the Summer months.
They have even launched an App so that you can see what is on where and the wifi is being upgraded later this Autumn as part of the ongoing improvements. In addition to all the facilities there are shops on site selling local specialities and souvenirs and on a practical note a launderette which is always a bonus if you have children in tow!
