Luxury Slimming at The Chedi Andermatt
The phrase, Slimming Lifestyle Retreat, can strike fear in the hearts of any well-rounded traveler. But when the retreat takes place at The Chedi Andermatt, a five-star resort, and the chef and wellness staff come from Brides-Les-Bains, a top-notch French weight loss spa, it’s time to lose the fear factor and possibly a few pounds as well.
Slimming Lifestyle Retreat Packages
This Autumn, from 29th October to 12th November, The Chedi Andermatt will offer 7- and 14-day Slimming Lifestyle Retreat packages for travelers interested in losing weight and re-vamping their pommes-and-Toblerone-consuming ways. In addition, the Chedi will offer a trimmed-down 5-day Detox option during the same time period as well.
The Chedi is a good place to tackle challenges. The Bali-esque fortress of sleek and chic in the Ursuren Valley, offers luxury on every level and can make one feel like anything is possible. While relatively new to the resort scene, the Chedi, which opened in 2013 was recently named Hotel of the Year 2017 by the restaurant guide, GaultMillau.
Constructed with the feeling of a temple in mind, (“chedi” means temple in Thai), the hotel features extra-large rooms with soaring ceilings decorated in a sophisticated Asian-Swiss fusion. This means there are many fireplaces (over 200) and multiple public and private cosy lounge areas.
The Chedi Spa
The spa, a stunning 2,400-square-foot space with multiple pools at various temperatures, draws many dedicated visitors to its regular features as well as its twice-a-year Boot Camps and Buddhist-monk-led yoga packages. For the retreat this Fall, clients will have full access to the spa and all of the hotel’s amenities as well as Brides-les-Bains’s renowned weight-loss program.
NewInZurich got a peek at how the program works and found that rather than deprive guests of every bit of salt and sauce, the Brides-les-Bains method emphasizes making small lifestyle changes and enjoying food and movement in healthy ways. Once guests are more invested in their lifestyle and educated about balancing meals and exercising, the wisdom goes, they will be more empowered to make lasting changes.
“We are not going to push you to the breaking point. We want to help you enjoy movement, we are here to encourage you,” says Kevin Eugene, who runs the fitness program at Brides.
The package kicks off with a one-on-one nutritional consultation with a certified dietician to help clients meet their weight loss and lifestyle goals and get the most out of the retreat. The dietician will measure guests’ body-fat ratios to determine the correct amount of calories they need to eat each day in order to burn fat and not muscle. The consultant then works out a customized weekly meal plan based on the client’s individual goals and tastes and helps guests choose the fitness classes and workshops that will be most beneficial. Within each custom program, Négro strongly advocates for getting the right balance between protein, fat and starch in dietetic meals.
“When you only count calories, you don’t get weight loss,” she says. “When you have the right balance, the body feels satiety, and that is very important if you don’t want to gain the weight again.”
Meals, prepared by Sebastian Roux, executive chef of the Gold Club at Brides-les-Bains, will meet high standards of taste and texture.
The Fitness Program
The fitness program is designed to complement the nutrition program, where guests are encouraged to enjoy the process so that they will have a higher likelihood of maintaining the program after they leave. The fitness schedule offers cardio, pilates and stretching classes to give guests a range of choices and to offer guests opportunities to focus on specific fitness needs. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore Andermatt by hiking or e-biking.
A range of sumptuous spa treatments are included in the retreat package, including six algae wraps, two Thai-style reflexology treatments, two Chedi signature massages, two Aquaflores treatments and much more. The provocatively named Aquaflores “slimming” massages involve an interesting procedure where the masseuse kneads and pinches the flesh right below the surface to release trapped water weight. It might help to know that screaming “ouch” while on the table for one of these treatments is perfectly acceptable.
At the end, the hope is that guests will learn how to make healthy lifestyle changes and will be inspired to maintain these changes at home. If not, another trip to The Chedi might just be what the doctor orders.
Rates for the Slimming Retreat: 7 nights from 5,050 CHF, 14 nights from 10,440 CHF
