Tasting Alentejo Wines
at FIFA Museum Zurich
Have you heard of the Alentejo wine growing area of Portugal? I must admit I hadn’t – until the other week when I was invited to a wine tasting event at FIFA museum in Zurich. In fact Switzerland is an important destination for the Alentejo wines as it is their fourth largest export market. However, not only does this area produce amazing wine – but it is also one of the most stunning areas in Portugal to visit.
I took part in a Masterclass where we had the opportunity to taste wines from two centuries and from five different decades! It was all presented in German by wine expert Thomas Vaterlaus, and was interspersed by short talks by the Portuguese wine producers in English and an introduction from Franciso Mateus (below left), President of the CVRA wine association.
We tasted both white and red wines and and I was impressed at the quality of these wonderful wines and I really made some great finds.
After the Masterclass there was another tasting which was open to the public where the 12 producers presented more than 70 wines. Over three hundred people attended the evening wine tasting, among them the President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino.
You can see a short video about the wine Masterclass here.
