Watch Making in Zurich with
Maurice de Mauriac
Maurice de Mauriac is a Swiss watch making company running watch making workshops for individuals, families and companies in Zurich. Robert went along on behalf of NewInZurich to find out all about the beauty of mechanical watches and the art of watchmaking…
The watchmaking atelier of Maurice de Mauriac is located right in the heart of Zurich’s finance district. A stone’s throw from Zurich’s famous Bahnhofsstrasse, probably on of the world’s top locations to buy fine jewellery and of course Swiss watches, watchmakers rack their brains to create and engineer unique Zurich made time pieces.
Former banker Daniel Dreifuss set up shop here and successfully follows his passion of watchmaking. Now 20 years after Maurice de Mauriac was established, it’s a family run business which includes Daniel’s sons Leo and Massimo and his wife Claudia, who is also an artist.
Looking around in the watchmaking atelier, it’s hard to miss not just the Swissness, but also the Zurichness. In the small workshop, which must be any watch collector’s dream, you can see how Zurich is a large part of the brand’s DNA.
Not only is Zurich written on the watches, but also when looking at some of the endless number of watch strap designs and options, it’s easy to see the importance of the Zurich colours blue and white.
One of the latest models, the Maurice de Mauriac L1 watch, designed by Zurich based designer Fabian Schwaerzler, is another example for the brand’s connection to Zurich.

For those of you who aren’t just interested in the art of watchmaking but are also keen on possessing your own Zurich made watch, there are endless options to customize your watch.
Stop by the atelier to chose what they have on offer regarding materials, sizes, strap designs and materials such as alligator or ostrich leather, or even bring in your own ideas which the watchmakers are often more than happy to take on board. The sky is the limit, and I got pretty close with trying on a one-of-a-kind watch for approximately CHF 60k.
Seeing a watchmaking atelier, in a relaxed atmosphere and having the Dreyfuss family passionately explaining what their business is about, was a very interesting experience. Not only for people who are already in to watches, but for anyone who appreciates quality workmanship.
