Fabulous Food at
FOOD Zurich 2017
FOOD Zurich has certainly become a really big event in the calendar for anyone interested in food and living in Zurich. From the Street Food Festival at Hardturm with its mix of exotic flavours and great big tent all the way to the Epicure event at the Dolder Grand, and everything inbetween, there really is something for everyone. The only problem now is that with over 150 events you have to really choose what you want to do in advance as you can’t possibly fit it all in!
The Opening Night at Jelmoli
One of the best food parties in Zurich must surely be the opening night of FOOD Zurich which takes place every year at Jelmoli department store just off Bahnhofstrasse. There are so many different stations, each with a chef creating a beautiful work of art out of delicious ingredients. The Zurich hotel chefs were present, along with gin producers, wine makers and this year there were a number of food activities you can take part in too – from making fresh pesto to truffle cheese and lots more beside.
The Street Food Festival Zurich
The Zurich Street Food Festival celebrates the flavours not just of Switzerland, but of food from all over the world. Whether you want dumplings, ceviche, curries, or vegan hamburgers there is something for all tastes and all appetites. With its relaxed atmosphere, brightly decorated food trucks and food stalls and laid back seating, it’s also a great place to meet with friends or family.
There were also a number of workshops and tours for FOOD Zurich this year and we went along to the Bean to Bar Workshop run by Kai at Taucherli.
Bean to Bar Workshop by Taucherli Chocolate
Not only did Kai explain all about the many stages he is involved in to make his chocolate in Zurich, but we also had an expert explaining to us the different processes which affect the flavour of chocolate too. It was facinating to see the chocolate at different stages of production from the raw cocoa beans to the point at which the chocolate is wrapped with the distinctive Taucherli label.
We had great fun learning about how Taucherli makes its chocolate in Zurich as well as a little chocolate tasting too!
A Google Lunch
Another fun activity was visiting the Google premises in Branschenkstrasse Zurich to experience a typical Google employee lunch. Not only was there a fabulous array of dishes to choose from, but we had a tour where they explained the importance of using up leftovers and how the soups were made with left over and discarded vegetables and food that would have otherwise been thrown away.
Sustainability has become a very important theme for the company and we were shown the kitchen workshop area where a batch of dessert had been prepared using “coffee flour” which is a little used by product of the coffee making process. One of the best things has to be the juice making station which was awesome! You could choose from a whole variety of fruit and vegetables and concoct your very own smoothie. I made one with apples, oranges, beetroot, ginger and chillies – delicious!
The Closing Party
Another event you shouldn’t miss each year is the Closing Party on Saturday night which takes place at the Engros Fruit and Vegetable Market not far from Prime Tower. It’s a vast warehouse which is decorated for the occasion with coloured lights, music and there is a fun atmosphere as you buy whatever you fancy eating from the food trucks and stalls and sit down with friends at long tables.
The Brunch Party
If you don’t manage to make the Closing Party you can always go for brunch, once again at the Engros Market. It’s more of a family oriented affair and this year there were lots of food related activities for kids, such a s juice and smoothie making etc. There were also lots of stalls and food trucks where you could purchase coffee, snacks and sandwiches too.
So if you missed FOOD Zurich for 2017, do put September 2018 in your diary for the next edition!
