A trip to the Schynige Platte is a great excursion if you’re visiting the Jungfrau Region. Last week we stayed at the Grand Hotel Victoria Jungfrau and took one of the final excursions of the season on the exquisite Schynige Platte Railway from Wilderswil to the top. With the Autumn colours and the sunshine it made for a very scenic outing.

Alighting at the head station we were greeted by the sound of the Alphorn. Walter and Jösi, dressed in traditional Bernese “Tracht” welcomed us with alpine melodies as we walked towards the “Panoramaweg” path, taking in breathtaking views all the way.

The seven kilometre train journey on the cog railway is beautiful. As we set off around ten o’clock in the morning there was still a light mist in the air.

The seats are wooden and the carriages are antique rolling stock from the 19th century, giving you a true “Belle Epoque” experience.

By the time we reached the top the sun had burnt through the cloud and the October skies were deep blue and the sun was shinning brightly.

The views are stunning. At each twist and turn you see something new – Swiss pastures, wooden huts, the odd herd of cows, a peek of the lakes below. At the summit you get superb views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau – a fabulous vista of these noble mountains.

When you arrive there are a variety of paths offering a wide range of hiking options. We plumped for the Panoramaweg which takes in beautiful views over Lake Thun and Lake Brienz.

As we were travelling in Autumn the colourful golden colours contrasted wonderfully with the blue skies and the views were breathtaking.

On the way down we stopped for coffee at one of the cafés and took in beautiful views of the mountains, as well as the valleys and of Lauterbrunnen (below).
