The Flower Island of Mainau Germany
One of the most popular attractions for flower and garden lovers in Zurich is a visit to Mainau Island over the border in Germany. Known as “The Flower Island and located about an hour away from Zurich, this popular tourist attraction is situated on Lake Constance, or “the Bodensee”.
Just 5 km from Konstanz, Mainau’s 111 acres of gardens and landscaped grounds attract over a million visitors each year. The island benefits from a semitropical climate which in the early 19th Century inspired Prince Nikolaus von Esterházy to create a botanical garden.
Over the years the beautiful gardens have been enlarged to include an arboretum, an Italian rose garden, special exhibitions, a children’s area, a castle, a baroque chapel, as well as a number of restaurants. It also boasts the largest butterfly house in Germany.
In Spring the island is famous for its Tulips which are in season shortly after the Orchids in the Palm House. The Tulips last approximately from March till May. Carmen visited with her camera to capture these great shots of the wonderful flowers.
After the Tulips, it’s time for the Rhododendrons and then the roses (as well as thousands of other flowers) in Summer, and finally the Dahlias in September. Whenever you go there is plenty to see – so why not plan your own trip to the “Island of Flowers”?
