BOAR GIN –
A Gin Sensation from the Black Forest
We recently had the opportunity to visit the Black Forest in Southern Germany. An easily accessible destination for a weekend strip from Zurich, there are so many picturesque villages to visit and the scenery is superb. Whilst we were there we had were invited to take a peek behind the scenes at the award winning gin factory belonging to BOAR Gin.
When I say “award winning” – I really mean it. BOAR Gin has won the following awards –
Global Spirit Award, Las Vegas: DOUBLE GOLD, best gin, best clear spirit
San Francisco Spirit Competition: GOLD
World-Spirits-Award, Vienna: GOLD
Chinese Wine & Spirit Award, Hongkong: DOUBLE GOLD
Concours International Lyon: GOLD
DLG: GOLD + Best Spirit in the German Gin Market
Frankfurt International Trophy: GOLD
International Spirits Competition in New York: GOLD + Gin Destillery of the year 2018
Los Angeles International Spirit Competition: GOLD
In fact it is the most awarded gin in 2017 and 2018. Pretty amazing for a small distillery from a dreamy little town hidden in the depths of the Black Forest!
Located in Bad Peterstal there are around 1,000 home distilleries and 60 licensed distilleries in the valley – all producing schnapps and liquors. Why so many? Well, this area is very fertile producing all manner of fruit – and you name it, there seems to be a schnapps to match every single one! From apple to blackberry, from peach to raspberry – the Black Forest really is schnapps country.
We met with Hannes Schmid, one of the three founders (seen on the left of the photo above) whose family distillery has been in existence for almost 180 years. However, back in 2015 they decided they wanted to try something very different from the usual fruit based schnapps – they wanted to produce gin.
It was a huge gamble – but one which has really paid off. Water plays a vital role in gin distillation and they were able to use the high quality water from their own spring. With lots of experimentation with different botanicals (they even use real truffles!), they invented the very fine BOAR Gin. We had a tour of their premises and saw the distillery at first hand.
BOAR has an amazing quality to it and and most importantly, unlike many gins which can lose their taste when mixed with tonic water, the identity of BOAR Gin still shines though. Something which has made it very popular with bartenders all over the world.
Of course as well as learning about this gin, we also got to taste it too! We tried it neat, with tonic water and in a raspberry cocktail. The verdict? Absolutely delicious – and the Raspberry Cocktail is to die for!
So next time you’re looking to buy a bottle of Gin, why not try the award winning BOAR Gin from the Schwarzwald? And if you’re thinking of weekend escape, why not consider a trip to the Black Forest?
