The Medieval City of Rapperswil
Rapperswil-Jona on Lake Zurich
One of the most interesting cities to visit on Lake Zurich is Rapperswil or Rapperswil-Jona as it is often referred to. The Medieval city centre with its towering castle is car free and offers a multitude of things to do for visitors of all ages.
Rapperswil City of Roses
Known as the city of roses for its fabulous garden of roses within the walls of the castle (it boasts more than 16,000), it is endowed with not only a castle, several churches and a monastery but the most amazing views across the lake. Incidentally the castle also houses a Polish museum. There is also a garden of roses for the blind called “Schanz” with the varieties of each rose written on placards in braille
Looking from one angle towards Zurich and from the other towards Glarus and the mountains beyond, the city has lots to offer.
With its picturesque meandering cobble stoned alleys, ancient buildings and glorious viewpoints and lakeside location there is plenty to do.
Eat and Drink in Rapperswil
Pavement cafés and restaurants beckon at every corner, cute little shops and of course there is nothing nicer than a stroll along the promenade just watching the world go by.
Take a Boat Trip
Regular boat services can whisk you away on cruises, or you can simply take the boat for a more scenic ride than the train back to Zurich.
Other Attractions in or near Rapperswil
The world’s longest wooden bridge is good for a walk and takes you across to the other side of the lake. Local attractions include Alpamare, Europe’s largest covered water park, Knie’s Childrens Zoo and nearby Atzmännig with its super long toboggan. There is also an activity walk for children along the castle walls.

Elephant Sculptures Rapperswil
The main square in Rapperswil is often used for events, displays and markets. In 2020 there was a colourful display of elephant sculptures there to highlight the plight of the Indian elephant. You can see a video of the Elephant display in the video below:
