Top Places to Visit in Switzerland –
Äscher Restaurant Ebenalp
Perched on a cliff edge the 170 year old Äscher Restaurant in Ebenalp in Appenzell, has graced the front cover of National Geographic magazine and been splashed over Tourist Guides, travel blogs, instagram posts and newspapers far and wide.
It was described by Huffington Post as “One of the five most interesting restaurants in the world” and its popularity has seen tourists flocking there in droves.
However, the success has put a great strain on the family working this small restaurant. The building is old and the interior is quite cramped. So much so that at the end of 2018 they finally decided to call it a day. The owners of the Berggasthaus, the Wildkirchli Foundation, made quite a few renovations to the restaurant over the closed season and a new team led by Gallus Knechtle of Firma Pfefferbeere took over the restaurant in 2019. If you are hiking or walking in this beautiful part of Switzerland, you can admire the beauty of this building and its amazing position clinging to the rocks.
Set in the Alpstein Massif in an area of outstanding natural beauty in Appenzell, the restaurant is also close to a number of caves where prehistoric remains have been found. The surrounding area is particularly popular with hikers and nature lovers.
