And The Tropical Greenhouses

Visiting the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich

If you’re looking for an interesting half day out in Zurich why not head to the Botanical Gardens of the University of Zurich? In particular, there are three giant glass domes or “Tropenhäuser” which are filled with different species of flora and fauna and which are perfect to visit on rainy days. What’s more is that both the gardens and the tropical green houses are free!

Each of the three tropical greenhouses has its own temperature, with a selection of plants which thrive in those conditions.

My favourite is the tropical one which is feels a bit like being in the jungle and even has a viewing platform.

Another is more like a desert with cacti and plants which grow in hot, dry conditions and the third is temperate.

You can see exotic plants such as cocoa plants, a very stinky purple one (pictured below) and all sorts of tropical foliage.

The also had some small aquariums as well as a little stream with fish swimming inside one of the domes.

If you’re going on a day when it’s not raining, why not explore the beautiful gardens too? They are open from early in the morning till early evening (see times below) and there is an on site café too.

So when you’re next looking for an interesting morning or afternoon out that’s suitable for all the family, why not pop down to the Botanical Garden of the University of Zurich.
