Top Things to Do in Vevey Switzerland
Visiting Vevey? Take a look here for some ideas and inspiration on things to see and do in this beautiful town on the shores of Lac Léman, or as it is known in English, Lake Geneva.
Explore the Old Town
The old town of Vevey is very quaint and there are some delightful shops to explore and beautiful little pedestrian streets to wander down. We discovered some traditional artisanal bakeries and ice cream shops as well as lovely street cafés. There is also a market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings in the Grande Place worth a visit. If you like ice cream why not try out ice cream by Cuckoo or maybe pop in for a coffee at one of the cafés or boulangeries and watch the world go by?
Whilst you’re in the old town check out some of the impressive Street Art like this giant comic.
This ship also caught our eye.
Enjoy a Delicious Lunch or Dinner
There are some wonderful gastronomic experiences to be had in Vevey. We had dinner at the delightful restaurant called “Ze Fork”. We enjoyed delicious regional cuisine washed down by wonderful local wines. In the Summer you can also sit outside and enjoy your meal or just an aperitif. Restaurant Ze Fork, Rue du Léman 2, 1800 Vevey. Tel. +41 21 922 18 13 For reservations and to visit the website click here.
We also went for the most delicious ice creams at a place called Cuckoo Ice Creams at Place du Théâtre 9, 1800 Vevey.
See The Fork
The “Ze Fork” restaurant is located straight opposite the actual “Fork in the Water” – which is apparently the largest fork in the water in the world. This art sculpture is very striking indeed.
Visit the Alimentarium Museum
The Alimentarium is a fascinating museum all about food. It is very interactive and great fun for the whole family. There are games to play, videos to watch as well as many, many interesting facts and figures to learn about our food today and through the ages. I could have easily have spent half the day there if I had been able! Alimentarium Museum, Quai Perdonnet 25, 1800 Vevey. Visit the Alimentarium website here.
Go For A Walk Along Lake Geneva
The promenade along Vevey is absolutely stunning and definitely worth a stroll. There are lots of seats set into the rocks so you can sit down and take in the beautiful views. Sunset is often quite spectacular.
Visit a Vineyard In the Region
If you like wine you must not miss the chance to visit a vineyard whilst in the region. As well as selling wine on site, many of them also offer “dégustations” or tastings like the one we visited in Cully, which is a short distance from Vevey, called Vins Potterat.
You can find out more about the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Lavaux Vineyard here.
Les Caves Ouvertes
Every Spring the vineyards in the area around the lake open their vineyards to visitors from all over the world to taste and sample their wines and enjoy a little celebration. The dates for 2019 are 8th – 9th June. Not only do you get to taste some remarkable wines but you also get to enjoy some fabulous views. For more information visit the website here.
Take A Boat Trip On The Lake
There are regular boat cruises you can take on Lake Geneva, and a nice trip is one to nearby Montreux for example. We took the opportunity to have lunch on board as well and it was a very relaxed way to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Find out more about cruising on Lake Geneva here.
Visit Chaplin’s World
Charlie Chaplin lived with his family in a beautiful house in a village just outside Vevey. Today his family home and its grounds have been turned into a wonderful museum dedicated to his life and work. It is a fabulous place to visit and explore and to learn about this very talented man. Chaplin’s World, Route de Fenil 2, 1804 Corsier-sur-Vevey. Tel: 0842 422 422.
Fête des Vignerons – Once In A Generation Event
If you were lucky enough to visit the Fête des Vignerons in Vevey in Summer 2019 you will have witnessed a very special event. It’s the celebration of the regions viniculture and is only celebrated once in a generation – so every 20 or 25 years. The shows and celebrations took place in a specially built arena in the centre of Vevey close to the lake. Find out all about the 2019 Fête des Vignerons here.
We attended the Fête des Vignerons 2019, so for photos of the event see our article here.
