Hiking Around Klöntalersee
If you’ve not visited Klöntalersee yet, then you really have something to look forward to! This beautiful turquoise/emerald coloured lake is in my opinion, one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. Last year we went for a hike in Spring and it was stunning. This year we visited on August 1st, Swiss National Day and once again it was breathtakingly beautiful.
One one side of the lake you have the main road, which is also a bus route and on the other a hiking trail. As we had driven from Zurich by car, we decided to head to the far end of the lake, towards Gasthof Klöntal, to have a simple but very good lunch on the terrace of the Gasthaus Richisau, a five minute drive up the mountain.
Suitable fortified, we set off downhill from the restaurant towards the far corner of the lake and began our hike along the southern side of the lake where there is a “Wanderweg” or hiking path.
Easy But Very Scenic Hike
This hike is very easy and suitable for most people and is mainly flat with a few ups and downs in places, but nothing serious. We even saw people pushing buggies along here. It is do-able, but you would need to carry them in certain places and watch out where the track gets narrow.
Initially when starting the walk, you follow the signs for Wanderweg or “Seerundgang” and continue walking away from the lake, over the river and finally you will see the signs to turn left and you will then start the hike.
This walk along the southern side of Klöntalersee is very scenic surrounded on all sides by beautiful mountains. There are lots of little pebble beaches and clearings along the lake for picnics and a swim if you fancy, so if you’re going in the Summertime don’t forget your swimsuit!
Parts of the hike are through pleasant woods and there are sections which get a little narrow against the cliffs. There are wild flowers, fallen trees and beautiful waterfalls.
Various Hiking Options
As our car was parked in the Southernmost point of the lake, we went from the bottom towards the top of the lake and then turned back. However, if you are there by bus then you could always hike from the top along the Southern side and then either walk back along the northern side or take a bus along this road.
