If you’re looking for a scenic hike, with views over lots of lakes and impressive mountains, why not take a trip to Stoos?  This tiny village of just 100 inhabitants is located in a beautiful corner of Schwyz in Central Switzerland. It’s just over an hour or so from Zurich and not far at all from Lucerne, and is full of enchanting scenery and stunning landscapes.

After parking in the car park of the Standseilbahn Schwyz-Stoos (GPS: Grundstr.230, 6430, Schwyz) you take the funicular which goes directly to this car free village located at 1,300m above sea level.

It’s the world’s steepest funicular railway with very distinctive barrel-shaped cabins. The funicular came into operation in Summer 2018 and can transport 1,500 passengers in each direction, every hour. The journey takes around 4 – 7 minutes, far less than with the old funicular. Definitely an experience to write home about!

From Stoos we took the chair lift to Fronalpstock. At the top of Fronalpstock, there’s a big new playground and a pygmy goats petting zoo for children. As you survey your surroundings, you’re struck by the magnificence of the views. You can clearly see Lake Lucerne and at least 10 other lakes and so many beautiful mountain peaks.

The colour of the water changes depending on the weather but on the day we visited it was this unbelievable shade of turquoise blue.

Children Ride Free in Summer

Good to know! Children up to 15 years old can ride for free during the Summer on all Stoos mountain railways as long as they have the Juniorkarte from SBB and are accompanied by a parent.

If you fancy a drink or a snack there is the Gipfelrestaurant Fronalpstock restaurant with its pleasant sun terrace or use the fire pits and picnic areas available.

We choose the Stoos ridge hike (from Fronalpstock to Klingenstock) and then took the chairlift from the summit of the Klingenstockback to Stoos. The hike along the ridge offers the most amazingly scenic panorama. The Alpine flora and the fauna are worth watching out for too and it is a beautiful and enjoyable hike.

Hiking time from the bottom takes approximately 3 and a bit hours. Back in Stoos we stopped at the Restaurant Skihaus Ibach. The food was excellent and the owners very friendly.

Sunset Rides

There are Sunset rides every Saturday from mid May until the beginning of November (check the website for details). The chairlift operates from 9.00 am until 10.00 pm.

In Winter Stoos is a ski resort – and incidentally the place where Swiss Olympic Skier, Hedi Beeler was born.
