If you’re looking for interesting and beautiful art for your home it can sometimes be daunting in Zurich. There are lots of galleries in Zurich, but PHM Art Gallery in Egg is a new gallery which is definitely worth a visit. Located in this ever-expanding town just outside the city, it is located right next to the Egg Forchbahn stop. In fact the gallery used to be the SBB Egg Forchbahn ticket office. By car it’s just an easy twenty – thirty minute drive from Zurich. Inside it is modern and airy with comfortable seating and plenty of space to take in the beautiful art work.
The gallery owners, Pieter and Karin Matthee are very friendly and welcoming and have lived nearby for almost ten years. They have strong ties to both Switzerland and South Africa. Getting to know new people over the years and having seen so many of their friends and acquaintances travel to South Africa, gave them the idea of bringing South African art to Switzerland.

There is widespread appreciation for the beauty of the country, for the diversity it represents and of course, for the magnificent wildlife. In 2017, a trip to South Africa made it very clear that the South African artists were very enthusiastic about having their work shown in Switzerland. This led to the decision to introduce the art of six well known South African artists to art lovers in Switzerland.

At the moment, the gallery features the work of these South African artists, as well as the work of a well-known Swiss artist, Kira Speiser. Each artist has their own personal style and this is strongly reflected in the variety of work on show. The range of styles generates much interest and conversation in the gallery and is a constant reminder that art is a personal choice. The paintings have been chosen specifically to create a sense of calm and beauty in the homes of art collectors.
