Cow Parade
The Entlebuch Alpabfahrt is a folk festival that is taken very seriously and a tradition which honours the alpine families of this region of Switzerland. Mercedes Catlatan went along to see the cow parade and took these great photos of the occasion.
The event attracts huge crowds to the village of Schüpfheim. Many of the men are turned out in an Edelweiss shirt or in the “Chüjer”, the traditional men’s costume with a decoratively edged black jacket, embroidered with edelweiss, and many of the women are wearing the traditional Entlebucher costume.
There are around 25 market stalls laden with Alpine cheese and other regional products for sale and pedestrians congregate along the edges of the car-free streets as the cows and other animals go by. There is yodelling and playing of the alpenhorn and the smell of Bratwurst and melted cheese wafts through the air.
It takes just under two hours for the herds of cows, cattle, calves and goats to get through the village of Schüpfheim and pass by. Once the cattle have left the folk festival continues in the village and there is much celebration.
