IM VIADUKT: A Unique Shopping and Dining Destination in Zurich
Tucked away in the trendy district of Zurich West lies “IM VIADUKT”, a hidden gem that combines history, culture, and commerce in one vibrant space. Im Viadukt is a former railway viaduct that has been transformed into a unique shopping and dining destination, complete with a market hall, artisan shops, restaurants, and event spaces.
IM VIADUKT was built in 1894 as part of the railway line that connected Zurich to the rest of Switzerland. For over a century, trains passed over the viaduct, until it was decommissioned in the 1990s. Instead of tearing down the viaduct, the city of Zurich decided to re-purpose it as a cultural and commercial space. In 2007, IM VIADUKT was born.
Today, IM VIADUKT is a bustling hub of activity, attracting locals and tourists alike. The centerpiece of the complex is the Market Hall, a spacious indoor market that offers a wide range of fresh produce, baked goods, meats, cheeses, and other gourmet foods. Here, you can have fun browsing through over 20 stalls, each run by local producers or farmers who are committed to sustainable, organic, and fair-trade practices.
In addition to the Market Hall, IM VIADUKT features a selection of artisan shops under the arches, which sell everything from handcrafted jewellery and clothing to home decor and furniture. Each shop is run by an independent designer or artisan, giving you the chance to discover unique and one-of-a-kind products that can’t be found anywhere else.
Foodies will also find plenty to love at the IM VIADUKT, with the Markthalle Restaurant and a range of small restaurants and cafes serving up delicious dishes from around the world. Whether you’re in the mood for sushi, pizza, burgers, or tapas, you should be able to find it here. And if you’re looking for a place to enjoy a drink with friends, the Viadukt Bar is the perfect spot, with a cozy atmosphere and an impressive selection of cocktails, wines, and beers.
However, IM VIADUKT isn’t just all about shopping and dining. The complex also hosts a variety of events throughout the year, from food festivals and concerts to art exhibitions and theater performances. And with its unique architecture and stunning views of the city, the IM VIADUKT is also a popular spot for photo shoots and film productions.
IM VIADUKT is a good example of the power of urban revitalization in Zurich. Through re-purposing an old railway viaduct, the city of Zurich has created a dynamic area and a fun and interesting space that supports local culture, small businesses, and provides a gathering place for the community. In addition, you can also find lots of events and cultural happenings taking place on a regular basis. So next time you’re in Zurich, make sure to pay a visit to the IM VIADUKT – I’m sure you will find something to spark your interest!
