Ufenau Island on Lake Zurich
Have you ever visited the Ufenau Island on Lake Zurich ? It is the larger of the two island just off Rapperswil-Jona and is only accessible by boat. Owned by Einsiedeln Monastery since 965, this small but beautiful island is also a nature reserve.
Although you’re not allowed to swim in the waters off the island, with its medieval churches and the Insel Wirtschaft Ufnau (chekc out their “Fischchnusperli” – Switzerland’s answer to fish and chips!) it’s a beautiful place to visit and explore. 
I visited a while ago in early Summer and once again more recently in September and it makes for a great day out and it’s a lovely place to go for an easy hike, with beautiful views giving you a different perspective across the lake. The religious link is still very strong and and the current church, St. Peter and Paul, was built in the 12th century, with the first Christian church having been built in the 7th century. There is also evidence of settlements dating back to Gallic/Roman settlements from the 2nd and 3rd century.
For its small size the island has a lot to offer with its lush vegetation and lots of natural wildlife. If you take a look at the brochure of the island here (in German) you can get an overview of its size and the wildlife which inhabit this unique piece of land in the middle of Lake Zurich.
