The Anglo – Swiss History of Grether’s Pastilles
At a recent event in Zurich I got to learn all about the well known brand of throat pastilles called Grether’s. As someone who often struggles with voice and throat problems whenever I get a cold, I discovered Grether’s quite a few years ago, shortly after moving to Switzerland. Not only are they great for sore throats as they’re soothing and come in great flavours – but they are pleasant to take any time. In fact, I always keep a small packet in my bag.
Grether’s Pastilles – An Anglo – Suisse Heritage
However, what I didn’t know was that the “Swiss brand” Grether’s Pastilles originally hailed from London! The well-known throat lozenge, began in 1850 with a recipe using blackberry juice in London. Allen & Hanbury, a family-run business and drug maker, were the first to make them. These pastilles quickly became a hit in London, and by 1910, the recipe made its way to Switzerland. There, they started making the original blackcurrant flavour and over a century ago, the classic gold tin appeared, becoming famous as a treatment for sore throats and voice care.
Grether’s Pastilles – Original Recipe with Natural Ingredients
By the 1930s, a Swiss company called Doetsch Grether AG began selling the pastilles in Switzerland. They eventually bought the brand, moved the production to Switzerland, and in 1974 renamed it Grether’s Pastilles. Despite these changes, the way they make the pastilles hasn’t altered at all and they still use the original recipe with natural ingredients.
Grether’s Pastilles Available in a Variety of Flavours
The first new flavour, the sugar-free redcurrant, was introduced in 1983. Later, sugar-free blueberry and elderflower options were added. Today, Grether’s Pastilles come in a variety of flavours, including some limited edition varieties. My current favourite flavour is ginger and lemon – but I do love the original blackcurrant too! As well as the iconic tins, they come in handy little sachets that you can put in your pocket or handbag so that you always have them to hand.
