No Swarovski Tree at the Christkindlimarkt
For many years, people flocked from far and wide to visit Zurich and see the magnificent Swarovski Christmas Tree. It used to take pride of place at the Christmas Market at Zurich main station. In 2020 the Christmas markets didn’t take place and sadly there was no tree – but in 2021 both the market and the Swarovski tree were back. However, from now on there is no Swarovski Christmas Tree adorned with Swarovski Jewels. Instead, after one year having an “eco” Christmas year, there is now an annual Lindt Christmas Tree adorned with giant Lindor chocolate baubles.
This was the “eco” Christmas Tree at the Christkindlimarkt at Zurich main station, powered by people!

Swarovski Christmas Tree – A Zurich Tradition
The tradition of the sparkling Swarovski Christmas tree at the Christkindlimarkt ended in 2021. It was one of the most stunning Christmas attractions at Zurich main station and the custom lasted for over 20 years. The Swarovski Tree was donated each year to the Christkindlimarkt by the company and served as a real centrepiece for the market.
It gave Swarovski the opportunity to highlight their latest Christmas Collection, which was always featured at the base of the tree in glass cabinets. The beautiful, glittering, 50 ft tall tree was usually bedecked with over 7,000 shimmering Swarovski pieces, creating an elegant structure which dominated the skyline. The tree was covered with tiny lights which changed colour intermittently and the sparkles could be seen from all corners of the station.

It was always switched on in a ceremony an hour after the “Lucy” lights were illuminated in Bahnhofstrasse, Zurich’s main shopping street, at 7pm. You can see a video of the lights being switched on here.
