Glacier Dreams Immersive Art by Refik Anadol Kunsthaus Zurich
Refik Anadol is an internationally acclaimed artist and pioneer in the field of data-driven art and AI-based creativity. Born in Istanbul in 1985 and now based in Los Angeles, Anadol is known for transforming vast datasets into visually stunning and emotionally resonant works of art. His installations, often described as immersive and poetic, challenge the boundaries of traditional art forms by blending technology, data, and human experience. With a focus on topics like memory, identity, and the environment, Anadol’s work invites audiences to reflect on pressing global issues while exploring the intersection of art and science.
Glacier Dreams at the Kunsthaus Zurich
One of Anadol’s most captivating projects, “Glacier Dreams“ (2023), is currently on display at the Kunsthaus in Zurihch. It directly addresses one of the most critical challenges of our time: climate change. Using artificial intelligence, Anadol has crafted a visual and sensory experience that highlights the fragility of Earth’s glaciers. For this work, Anadol sourced over 100 million images from online and institutional archives, as well as a specially collected dataset of more than 10 million glacier images from Iceland, Greenland, and Antarctica. By analyzing and processing this vast array of data, Anadol creates hypnotic visuals that depict the beauty and vulnerability of glaciers, encouraging audiences to reflect on their significance in the face of climate change.
“Glacier Dreams” is presented as an immersive installation at the Kunsthaus Zürich. The experience engages multiple senses, including sight, hearing offering a full-body engagement that draws viewers into the icy world of glaciers. The installation’s flowing visuals are evocative of the brushstrokes of Impressionist master Claude Monet, whose water lily paintings similarly aimed to immerse viewers in a contemplative experience. Anadol’s innovation, however, goes beyond traditional painting—he introduces the concept of “Data Painting,” where images are not static but constantly evolving. This dynamic approach questions the permanence of art and underscores the impermanence of the natural world.

The art installation is located on the first floor of the Chipperfield wing of the Kunsthaus Zurich and as the installation is quite small it can only accommodate 5 people at a time. As the floor is made of mirrors, felt slippers (provided) must be work over your shoes.
The exhibition is a poetic reminder of the urgency of climate change, as well as a testament to the power of art and technology to inspire awareness and action – so why not go and see it?
