Have you ever heard of Non Filtré wine? This unfiltered Chasselas wine is a unique speciality of Neuchâtel, and I recently took the train from Zurich to learn more about it. Along the way, I saw the region’s stunning vineyards, met the producers and of course, sampled this intriguing wine.
You can find out more about the Neuchâtel 2025 Vin Non Filtré wine which took place on the third Wednesday of the year in 2026 here.
What is Non Filtré Wine?

Non Filtré wine has an interesting history that dates back to 1975. Henri-Alexandre Godet, a Neuchâtel winemaker, created this unfiltered wine almost by accident. Faced with a wine shortage for a friend’s wedding, he delivered it straight from the barrel without filtering it. The wine’s cloudy appearance, caused by suspended fine yeast particles, was unconventional at the time but a hit with the wedding guests. This accidental creation soon became a local favourite and is now a hallmark of the region.

Non Filtré Wine is Made Exclusively from Chasselas Grapes
Made exclusively from Chasselas grapes, Non Filtré is bottled in early January, making it the first Swiss wine of the year. Its creamy texture, floral aromas, and notes of citrus and tropical fruits set it apart from traditional Chasselas wines. The fine yeast enhances its freshness and provides a delightful preview of spring.

I began my trip by visiting the cellars at the Caves du Prieuré where I had my first ever taste of Neuchâtel’s Vin Non Filtré and I really enjoyed this unique wine!

50 Years Of Vin Non Filtré

This year marked the 50th anniversary of Vins Non Filtré and there was a press conference and celebration to toast the occasion on the third Wednesday of January, which is the traditional date for the release of the wine. It was also a great opportunity to meet the winemakers.

These passionate individuals shared stories about their craft, from cultivating Chasselas grapes to preserving the traditions of Non Filtré wine.
Tasting the Wine
Tasting Non Filtré wine is an interesting experience. Before opening, it is always important that you turn the bottle upside down to mix the fine yeast. It’s a quirky tradition that’s even reflected in the region’s upside-down labels.

The distinctive profile of the unfiltered wine, pairs beautifully with smoked fish, soft cheeses and even exotic dishes and earlier we had enjoyed a great lunch at La Pinte de La Petite Joux with lovely snowy views over the vineyards.
