SWING IT: Giant Swing Art Installation by Susan Butti Stamm

If you’re exploring the hills above Herrliberg this summer, don’t be surprised to come across a striking splash of colour just off the Forchstrasse: a giant swing standing seven metres high, with a panoramic view over Lake Zurich. This fun piece of public art, is called SWING IT and was created by local artist Susan Butti Stamm. People of all ages are welcome to pass by and to enjoy a swing and take in the gorgeous view over the countryside and Lake Zurich.

Inspired by a trip to Saudi Arabia, where Butti Stamm saw adult and children’s swings placed side-by-side but separately, the idea behind SWING IT was to encourage shared experiences. She thought it would be so much nicer to swing together – so that’s exactly what her artwork now offers.

The enormous swing, created out of steel by a craftsman in Stäfa, is not just for decoration—it’s definitely designed to be used. Set in a field near the popular Restaurant Buech and the local scout hut, the swing has become a magnet for walkers, families and passersby.
For the artist, it’s about more than just movement. The swing represents life itself: its rhythm, its momentum, the effort it takes to reach new heights – and the joy of doing it together. Butti Stamm believes that we can all do with finding a shared rhythm and connecting with others right now, exactly what this art installation offers.

This isn’t the first outing for SWING IT. Last summer, it was part of the Line of Art exhibition in Küsnacht and Erlenbach, where it delighted young and old alike. Butti Stamm is well known for her ceramic works, calligraphy and installations such as her soaring steel birds currently on display at Zurich Airport’s Hyatt The Circle. However Swing It, her latest creation, marks a turning point in her artistic journey towards more interactive, tactile art.
By day, the swing is alive with laughter and motion. By night, the seat gently glows, adding a little magic to the landscape. But don’t wait too long: the swing will only be in Herrliberg until mid-September, after which the field will return to agricultural use. The artist hopes to relocate the project to another public space—perhaps somewhere in the mountains or along the lakeshore—so it can continue to bring joy to new communities.
