My Full-Body MRI Scan in Zurich: The New Wellness Trend

When I was recently offered the opportunity to test out the procedure for a full-body MRI, I was really keen to try it out. I had heard a lot about the trend in both the U.S. and U.K. press. In fact, it’s been widely reported, for example, that a well-known British TV presenter was diagnosed with a brain tumour after a full-body scan and, as a result, was able to undergo potentially life-saving surgery. As someone who believes that prevention is always better than cure, I decided it was definitely something I would like to try.
Full-body MRIs are gaining popularity worldwide, with celebrities like Kim Kardashian not only endorsing them but also investing in the technology. In the U.S., these scans have become a status symbol, blending advanced health monitoring with luxury. However, this cutting-edge trend has crossed the Atlantic and is now available in Zurich through Aeon, a Zurich-based company.
The Full-Body Scan Trend
Full-body MRIs are marketed as a proactive way to detect potential health issues early. Covering vital organs, muscles, and tissues from head to mid-thigh, the scans take about an hour and provide insights into one’s overall health. While some see them as a luxury health tool, others view them as a serious resource for preventative healthcare. Aeon, founded in 2023 in Zurich, specializes in full-body MRIs and health checks designed to detect over 500 potential health risks.
Kim Kardashian praised the preventative power of full-body MRIs on Instagram, saying the scans have the potential to detect diseases like cancer and aneurysms at their earliest stages. She added, “It has saved the lives of some of my friends, and I wanted to share it with you,” using the hashtag #NotAnAd. Other celebrities, including Kate Hudson, Paris Hilton and Elon Musk have also publicly endorsed the trend.
So what is involved in having a Full Body Scan?
My Visit to Aeon in Zurich
Aeon’s MRI location in Zurich is a clean, modern space with professional staff who took care of me and explained everything in great detail. In fact, before the scan, Aeon provides all the information you need, advising you how long to fast beforehand and explaining every aspect of the procedure.
I was taken to a changing area where I had to change into a white cotton tunic and trousers and remove all metal items, including jewelry and piercings, to ensure accuracy during the scan. I was then taken to the room where the MRI machine is located and given headphones to listen to music during the process. You have to lie very still during the procedure, but what I liked (in comparison to other MRI scans I have had) is that everything was explained step by step. For example, through the headphones I was told before each scan how long it would be and when to breathe in, hold my breath, and breathe out. The entire process took around 50 minutes, and it was non-invasive and very straightforward.
As well as the body scan, I also had my blood taken. Apparently, this is to minimize false positives and provide insights into potential risks like diabetes or cardiovascular issues. This dual approach ensures comprehensive results and reduces unnecessary worry.
Understanding the Results of the Full-Body MRI Scan
A few days later, I received an email informing me that my results were ready to be viewed, and an appointment was arranged for a personalized video consultation with a radiologist. The doctor was very friendly and walked me through all the detailed images of my brain, spine, etc., reassuring me that my results were generally fine. He also answered any questions I had.
He pointed out some minor issues, including slight compression in my lower back, which served as a wake-up call to improve my posture—something I already knew I should address. The bloodwork also revealed that my cholesterol level was outside the optimal range, prompting me to make an appointment with my GP to see what I can do to improve this. Overall, however, I was declared healthy, and it felt great to receive such a positive result.
So Why Consider a Full-Body MRI?
A full-body MRI offers peace of mind and an opportunity to detect health issues early. While the cost is not insignificant (CHF 2490 for the version I had with the MRI and blood test or CHF 2990 for the full service, which includes an additional DEXA bone density scan), it’s an investment in your well-being. Aeon is also working to make the service more accessible by collaborating with insurance providers to cover some of the costs.
Is It Worth It?
Seeing detailed images of your brain or spine and discussing them with a radiologist is a fascinating experience although I must admit, just before the call I did wonder how I would react if I received really bad news. However, then I thought again, and realised that being fore warned is being fore armed and surely prevention is always a good idea. In fact, I found the experience both very interesting and reassuring.
