.Top Tobogganing Near Zurich
Love the mountains but don’t want to ski? How about a fun sledge ride? Well, you’re in luck! There’s plenty of opportunity for tobogganing very close to Zurich. See our top tips below.
🛷 Uetliberg
Where better to start than Zurich’s very own mountain – Uetliberg. However, don’t let the beginning of the run fool you as you definitely get an adrenaline rush (and beautiful views) as you slide down this “medium paced” run which measures 4.5km and is 430 vertical metres. You can even go night sledding here too!

🛷 Hörnli
To enjoy this sledge ride you need to walk for almost one and a half hours on foot (yes, I know this one requires a certain amount of dedication!). However, at the end of the walk you get to whizz down a fabulously fun run which really picks up speed.

🛷 Hoch Ybrig
Another traditional resort is Hoch Ybrig where alongside skiing you can enjoy fabulous sledging along a 2.5km run at 493 vertical metres.
🛷Atzmännig
Atzmännig offers fun and family-friendly tobogganing with easy access from Zurich. A toboggan run with a 1.9-kilometre descent and a vertical drop of 360 metres, makes it an ideal winter outing when snow conditions allow. A chairlift takes you directly to the start, toboggans can be rented on site, and nearby food options make it easy to turn the ride into a relaxed day out; younger children can ride safely with an adult. Please note the run operates only in dry, snowy conditions.
🛷Elm
The Elm toboggan run in the canton of Glarus is one of Eastern Switzerland’s most popular winter sledding routes, known for its length, scenery and constant sense of movement. The run stretches for around four kilometres with an altitude difference of approximately 470 metres and begins at the Ämpächli mountain station, reached easily by gondola from the village of Elm. From the top, the route follows a wide, car-free, snow-covered road that winds through pine forests and past alpine huts, with numerous switchbacks and curves all the way down to the valley.
Despite being officially classified as family-friendly, the Elm run offers a more dynamic ride, with fast sections, steeper bends and very few flat stretches. The many turns help regulate speed, while high snow banks along the sides usually add a reassuring sense of safety. A single descent takes around 20 minutes, and sleds can be rented at both the top and bottom cable car stations. When snow conditions are good, the experience is even more special in the evening, as the run is floodlit on selected nights and can be combined with a fondue or raclette dinner at the mountain restaurant for a classic Swiss winter outing.
Some Top Tips for Tobogganing
Tobogganing is great fun for old and young alike. However, don’t be fooled into thinking that this is an easy sport just for young kids – those toboggans really fly down the mountains (!!!) – so do heed a few safety recommendations:
- Always start off on easy (less steep) slope to get to grips with the handling of the toboggan.
- Aim to control your speed so that you can easily stop or slow down if you need to.
- Always wear a helmet.
- Avoid having 2 people wearing helmets directly behind each other
- Keep an eye out for the prevailing conditions.
- Adjust your speed depending on the incline of the slope and the number of people.
- Watch out for skiers and snowboarders!
