Albanifest Winterthur – A Traditional Swiss Festival

Every year on the last weekend of June, Winterthur’s Old Town transforms into a bustling festival ground as the city hosts Albanifest, one of Switzerland’s largest and most vibrant “Altstadtfeste”.
Originally rooted in a historic event from 1264, when Rudolf of Habsburg granted Winterthur a charter of liberties on the feast day of Saint Alban, the celebration has evolved over centuries. While it once involved civic gatherings, musical ceremonies and free bread and wine for townspeople, today’s Albanifest is a lively mix of culture, music and community spirit.
Revived in its modern form in 1971, the festival now gets over 100,000 visitors annually. Organised by the Albanifest-Komitee, it spans 200,000 m² of Winterthur’s Old Town, featuring nearly 100 food stalls and pop-up restaurants, run by local clubs and associations. The proceeds go towards supporting community activities and charitable initiatives.
As usual, this year a packed line-up of entertainment is planned with live bands and DJs, alongside family-friendly highlights like the Albanifest Chilbi funfair spread across various locations. Attractions include a Ferris wheel, bumper cars, pony rides, and children’s rollercoasters, while the dedicated Chinder-Albani area offers everything from face painting and bungee trampolines to free craft workshops.
The Albanifest is more that just a party and it is also a celebration of Winterthur’s local identity and multicultural community.
